Airtel
About:
Airtel is the brand name under which Bharti Televentures (a Bharti Enterprises company) provides a range of telecommunications services which include Mobile, Landline and Internet services. Prior to embarking on a re-branding strategy in 2004, Bharti Televentures marketed each segment of its business under a different brand - Airtel (Cellular/Mobile), Touchtel (Landlines & Broadband Internet), IndiaOne (Long Distance) and MantraOnline (Internet). But a change in government policy prompted the move towards an amalgamation of all four segments under the flagship brand of Airtel.The Bharti group is also involved in a joint venture with Singtel to build and operate a submarine fibre optic network between India and Singapore. This incidentally is the world's largest (in terms of bandwidth) submarine cable system with a capacity of 8.4 Tbps.
Technology:
Airtel Broadband is powered by DSL technology. DSL provides blazing-fast, secure Internet access and can be delivered to both homes and to businesses. Delivered right through a regular telephone line, data rates can vary from 128Kb to 8Mb per second depending on the type and cost of the service.
Airtel's installation typically involves a standard phone line plugged into a USB modem (also known as the CPE), which in turn is plugged into the PC. DSL routers are also available, but are offered only with select plans. The PC needs driver software to use the modem. Airtel, upon request, also supply Ethernet based modems which are generally recommended over their USB counterparts.
The default USB modem being provided by Airtel is one manufactured by Realtime Systems, which runs on a Conexant chipset. Older installations came with a Tera-100U manufactured by Terragate Inc. A guide is available to getting the latter working on Linux.
Notes:
# DSL modems are available for outright purchase or rent. DSL routers are also similarly available only on select plans. The applicable charges listed below are a guide only:

* Modem Outright Purchase: Rs.2000
* Router Rent: Rs.199/Month

* Router Outright Purchase: Rs.3600
# Additional downloads (where applicable) are charged at varying rates that usually range between Re.1/MB to Rs.2/MB.
