BSNL

About:

BSNL or Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is India's largest Communication Service Provider (CSP), and seventh largest in the world. Previously known as DoT (Department of Telecommunications) when it was under federal government control, it became a corporation in 2000. BSNL operates across the length and breadth of India (except the metropolitan cities of Mumbai and New Delhi which is managed by MTNL, a sister concern.) and commands over 45 million landlines and mobile connections.

BSNL launched its ADSL broadband service - DataOne in early 2005, and is well underway in extending the service to over 200 cities and towns in India. An initial sunrise period wherein downloads were unlimited ended on June 30th.

Technology:

BSNL supplies ADSL broadband connections over its extensive existing copper network. More detailed information on the connection will be added shortly (once it is verified).

Notes:

  • BSNL includes both uploads and downloads in its data-caps.
  • Additional downloads and uploads are charged at rates varying from Rs. 0.60 to Rs. 1.40.
  • All plans have an annual payment option which is the fee for monthly plan multiplied by ten. In other words, a 2 month discount can be availed.
  • All plans incur:
    • an initial registration fee.
    • a refundable security deposit, usually equal to the plan charges for one month.
    • a modem rental fee. Modems can also be purchased from BSNL or elsewhere.

    Some plans have an option of a free modem if a long term commitment has been made.

  • Ethernet, USB and Wi-Fi modems are available.
  • Plans require a minimum commitment usually between one and three months.
  • Certain plans provide a free night time browsing feature between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.
  • BSNL broadband customers need to also be/become BSNL telephone customers. However, some plans offer the telephone connection at zero monthly minimum cost.
  • Business plans are available to home users. However, home plans are available to businesses only in the case where the telephone connection of the business is not registered under the name of the company.
