Hathway

About:

Established in 1995, Hathway Cable and Datacom started off purely as a cable TV company and then diversified into the ISP business, providing Internet connections over its existing cable network. The company is part of the Rajan Raheja group, whose subsidiaries also include (amongst others) The Outlook Group, Exide Industries, Globus Stores, Asianet and Sonata Software.

The STAR Group holds a 26% stake in Hathway.

Technology:

Hathway Cable Internet Service is based on DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Services Interface Specifications) protocol. DOCSIS has been developed by Cable Labs, a Research & Development consortium of Cable Service Providers in North & South America. It is now the de facto standard for all Cable Internet deployments across the world.

Coaxial cable is run to the customer's premises, and connected to the cable modem (usually a Motorola Surfboard SB5100i) or cable router (brand unknown - possibly a Zyxel). The Surfboard can support speeds of up to 30 Mbps, but is capped to a more sedate 256 Kbps (0.83%)/512 Kbps (1.66%) or as applicable. The Surfboard supports both USB and Ethernet connections to the PC - Hathway recommend connecting via the Ethernet connection and require an Ethernet NIC on the PC. The use of an Ethernet connection removes driver bottlenecks and makes this connection extremely Linux friendly.

That said, you can also connect via the USB port [drivers link below], and if need be connect two computers to the modem (and avoid the need for a switch if you only have 2 PCs) - one to the Ethernet port and the other to the USB port. The modem also has a basic DHCP server and other options in it's control panel (reachable by accessing http://192.168.100.1/ via your browser - proceed with caution :-P).
