Chandigarh, July 7: The Consumer Forum has directed M/s Sify Broadband Limited, Sector 34-A, Chandigarh, to pay an amount of Rs 6,600 on account of compensation and service that was not provided to a local resident. Col Pritpal Singh Bhatia, a resident of Sector 34-C, Chandigarh, had moved the forum alleging deficiency in service against Sify Broadband.

I was looking to update Sify's plans on this site and came across a marketing page for cable TV operators (Sify works on a franchise system with local cable TV operators) that included the following comparison table:

Note: The numbers in red have been added in by yours truly..
While it is common practice to see some license being taken in marketing documents, the above is pure nonsense. As far as I am aware, the only other cable operator in India with a notable user base is Hathway. Addressing each of the marked points compared to services provided by Hathway:
- 24 Kbps dial-up? Considering that Sify is also a dial-up provider, are these the speeds one can expect? Based purely on hearsay, this is probably true.
It is absolute BS to claim that other cable ISPs like Hathway offer only 48 Kbps connections. Hathway offer connections of speeds between 64 Kbps and 512 Kbps (for residential users). Sify only offer plans with speeds between 64 Kbps and 256 Kbps and most of them are unattractive, expensive and handicapped with quaint (and debilitating) restrictions (150 MB/day?).

I have used sify from the dial-up days and used broadband for about 8 months. In the start they did not have wide range of service plans. They even offered 48kbps for 450/m unlimited.(am still confused how they call it BB :-??).Recently they stopped providing 48kbps(converted it to 64kb).I consider sify to be cheaper than anyother BB services in delhi/chennai. Now they are offering 256kpbs, 895/m unlimited. But the d/l is limited to 150MB per day(how do they call it unlimited!!!???). If it exceeds 150mb...one day from the validity is reduced. The speed always sticks around 256(Whereas hathway does not reach the said speed).
